Why Eco Wool?
Eco wool fiber is the most complex natural textile fiber. It absorbs moisture yet repels water; it stretches, and then springs back to shape. It can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture, and wick it into the air. This keeps you warm when it’s cool and cool when it’s warm.
Wool has a natural crimp that gives it the advantages of elasticity, flexibility, loft, and resilience over other fibers. The result is greater comfort, durability, warmth and shape retention.
- Wool is durable. An organic wool fiber can be bent up to 20,000 times without breaking.
- Wool fiber in bedding results in calmer heart rates, lower humidity next to the skin, and better maintenance of the optimal skin temperature.
- Wool does not mildew. Additionally the wool fibers will not itch due to the fact that they are encased in an organic cotton cover.
- Wool is naturally flame resistant – it will not sustain fire on its own accord.
- Wool fiber has an abundance of air spaces between the fibers that cushion the body and alleviate pressure points.
Why 100% Natural Latex
If a mattress is not labeled 100% Natural Latex it means that the latex used is mixed with petroleum based plasticizers such as butadiene and styrene or it is completely synthetic. Natural Latex is made from the milk sap of the Hevea Brasiliensis or Rubber Tree. It is naturally antimicrobial. Dust mites can’t live in it and it has natural anti mildew properties.
Natural Latex is pliable, resilient and durable. It does not pack down and take a set like polyurethane foam. It provides excellent isolation of motion. You will not feel your partner move or get in or out of bed.
Natural Latex has an inherent springiness that pushes back for support when you lay on it. It is the ideal mattress material as it will not show body impressions or lose its ability to support your body in a state of restful equilibrium.
Why Organic Cotton?
Conventional cotton is grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides and accounts for 25% of the insecticides used worldwide. Pesticides do not wash out and fabrics off gas toxins. The cotton fiber used in ordinary mattresses is loaded with boric acid which is a component of various roach killers. The runoff from nitrogen loaded synthetic fertilizers kills aquatic life. Chlorine bleaching releases carcinogenic dioxins. Most permanent-press and stain and water-repellant finishes can off gas formaldehyde. The manufacturing of these substances releases PFOA into the air.
Organic cotton is grown in soil that has not been treated with chemical fertilizers for three years or more nor are toxic pesticides used to protect it from insects. Growers use compost and other organic materials to nourish their crops. They introduce ladybugs and other beneficial insects to control aphids and other small parasites.
After harvest no synthetic dyes or other toxic chemicals are added to the cotton. The end result is pure fluffy totally natural cotton.
Why Buy a “Natural” Mattress?
If you care about your health, general well-being and the environment, why would you buy anything else? An Eco-Cloud natural mattress will allow you to sleep comfortably and spend the maximum amount of time in the restorative stage of sleep every night for many many years.
The good news and bad news about Big Name Brand Mattresses: The good news is that there is a sale at your local mattress chain store or department store and you can save a ton of money this week (and not only this week!) The sale that got you so excited about buying a mattress will be there next week and the week after that and in fact it never ends. If you manage to buy a commercial mattress that is not on sale you will be the first to do so.
The bad news about the beautiful mattress in the ad that will “solve all of your sleep and back problems” is that it is designed to fail. All Big Name Brand mattresses are loaded with polyurethane foam which is nothing more than a multitude of tiny chemical sheaths around bubbles of air. This material cannot support your back and will rapidly take a set and develop a valley where you sleep.
Yes, it will feel good in the store, but do not expect the “new bed feel” to linger. This is the upholstery material of choice of the Big Name Brand’s because it is incredibly cheap to buy and has a deceptively comfortable feel when it is in a new mattress. But wait… there’s more! You have no idea what’s really in your mattress.
You know that there’s foam and a spring system, but you really don’t know what that foam is made from. The polyurethane polymers are formed by reacting a polyisocyanate with a polyhedral compound in the presence of a catalyst. Does that sound like something you want to sleep on?
We haven’t even mentioned fire blockers, fire retardants, and PBDE’s. Every Big Name Brand mattress has some version of these ingredients in it in order to pass the federal statute 16 CFR, Part 1633 which is a very stringent burn test of a sample of every mattress sold today. You will not be able to find out which chemicals are used in the fire blockers regardless of whether it is in the form of a fabric, fiber or a spray due to what are called “trade secrets”. There is no FDA approval for these chemicals since you are not eating them. The manufacturers are not required by law to either label them on products that use them nor are they required by law to test them for side effects over long time usage. Therefore, when you buy a conventional mattress you will be breathing whatever outgasses from these chemicals every night for years and years. Do you really want to risk the unknown consequences?
Eco-Cloud mattresses use none of these chemicals, because wool is a natural fire blocker that allows our mattresses to pass the burn test with flying colors. They are healthful, durable and incredibly comfortable. Why would you want anything else?
